But today tourism is only a small part of the village.

The Sintra mountain range and the dunes provide a landscape setting recognised outside Portugal.
The history of Quinta da Marinha dates back to the end of the 19th century. But it was in the 20th century that his enterprise began with the purchase of the Marinha from the Count of Moser by Carlos Montez Champalimaud, a medical surgeon and entrepreneur. He immediately verified the high urban, tourism and real estate potential in that region. Thus, he signed a contract with the Municipality of Cascais for the urbanisation of the Navy, drafted the respective projects in collaboration with English architects and began, in 1922, to fix the sands and plant the forest.
After his death in 1974, and for 14 years, it was possible to confirm the government and city council authorizations necessary for the carrying out of the project devised in 1922 by Carlos Montez Champalimaud, which has undergone various changes since its first version.
Later, in the 70s, the Quinta was divided into four companies: Guia, Raso, Abano and Euronova (now Quinta da Marinha, SGPS), the latter belonging to Carlos de Sommer Champalimaud, son of Carlos Montez Champalimaud and father of current shareholder Miguel Champalimaud.
Subsequently, the dunes were fixed and the whole area was conserved and afforested, transforming a sandy area into a place well known for its landscape features.
The first part of the property to be developed, from the beginning of 1980, was the Guia, located in the southeast area of the Quinta, which currently includes an 18-hole golf course, a Hotel, a residential area and a tourist village.
